Description

Santiago Ruiz’s ‘O Rosal’ is a blend of Albariño, Godello, Loureiro, Treixadura and Caíño Blanco. These varieties are all vinified separately in micro tanks, which Luisa affectionately calls ‘los niños’ (the children) and undergo a period of lees ageing before the final blend is assembled. The resulting wine is vibrant, with bright aromas of apple, apricot and ripe lemon coupled with subtle herbal notes and a stony minerality. The distinctive label is a map of the region, hand drawn by Santiago’s daughter to guide guests travelling to her wedding which took place at the winery.

`O Rosal` is the most southerly sub-region of the Rías Baixas, situated on the north bank of the river Miño, which marks the border with Portugal's Vinho Verde. Here the vineyards benefit from cooling Atlantic breezes and the moderating influence and increased airflow from the river. The sustainably-farmed Santiago Ruiz vineyards in Tomiño cover 38 hectares and are planted with Albariño, Loureiro, Caíño Blanco, Treixadura and Godello. Loureiro, a variety prized for its aromatic flavour profile, performs particularly well here and wines labelled `O Rosal` must include this grape in the blend, something which distinguishes them from the majority of Rías Baixas wines which are 100% Albariño. Soils in `O Rosal` are predominantly sandy over a granite bedrock, this translates into wines with an aromatic richness combined with a characteristic wet stone minerality.

The grapes were hand harvested by variety using 20kg crates, followed by a hand selection process on sorting tables upon arrival at the winery. Each variety underwent cryo-maceration and was fermented separately in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Each variety was vinified separately and, after a short period of lees ageing, the blend was carefully assembled to produce the distinctive Santiago Ruiz style.

Bright yellow in colour, with vivid floral aromas, as well as notes of lime, crisp apple and subtle herbal nuances. The palate is complex yet elegant, with wonderful fresh fruit characteristics complemented by a stony minerality and a crisp and clean finish.
