Duty on wine (11%abv to 14.5%abv) goes from £2.23 per bottle to £2.67 add another 20% for the VAT = £3.20 per bottle is pure tax. The biggest increase since 1975 from the 1st August. Stock up now!
The end of the £7.99 wine is nigh- unless you like being a 50% tax payer...Total tax on a £7.99 wine will be £4.01 from August 1st...
As you know, I cannot compete with the buying power of supermarkets, nor would I wish to. I prefer to buy wine from smaller producers, real people, family concerns who sell at sustainable prices which is why it is heartbreaking to tell you that any new wine I buy from the 1st August will be £1 more on the shelf, but those winemakers wont see a penny of it because our government thinks its ok to hike up a tax by 20% in one go.
